In Spanje is het gebruikelijk dat men een eigen stukje land heeft voor het kweken van groente, voor eigen gebruik of om weg te geven.
Dat gold vooral voor de kleine stadjes, maar sinds enige jaren gebeurt dat ook in grotere steden, zoals Barcelona. Hier vooral door de gemeenteraad.
Stads- groente tuinen (“urban vegetable gardens”) zie je op balkons, terrassen, patios, scholen, buurttcentra en pleinen; particulier of openbaar.
L’hortet del forat in het centrum van Barcelona is ontstaan als buurttuin op braakliggende grond.

The place was a hole resulting from the demolition of several buildings, according to a new urban plan of the City Council. Then the neighbors decided to occupy the area and plant vegetables and spices, and when the Council fitted out the whole square, it was decided to keep the vegetable garden after a heated struggle by the neighbors. Now, the garden is administrated by the Assembly of the neighborhood, and they organize activities for the children of the area and communal meals when there is a surplus of any kind in their production.

The garden hasn`t only brought them an activity of spare time but also a lot of groups of children, friendships expressed for example in the lunches they do together and also knowledge, because not all of them had have a garden before.
